St. Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College  – Human Resource Strategies Fellow (HR Strategies Fellow)

Social Media:

St Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College on Facebook

Reporting Manager:  Kalkidan Gebretsadik from The Office of Innovative Strategies and Operations

Core Mission:

Our mission is to provide comprehensive healthcare services, teach high quality medical education and meet the needs of the communities we serve through our advanced and affordable healthcare system.

Organizational Culture & Management Style:
SPHMMC is a huge hospital with different cultures in the different departments. For the most part, the hospital is trying to serve an enormous number of people at low costs. This means that the staff members have to work extremely hard and are extremely busy. However, the hospital operates under the common goal of providing low-income and rural populations with low-cost but quality medical service. Because of this, the busy work culture is also one of respect and understanding.

The provost’s office especially believes in allowing its employees a large degree of autonomy and focuses on deliverables and ideas more than hours punched. The fellow will be expected to periodically report their activities and suggestions and will also be oriented to different resources at the hospital. Other than general guidance, the fellow will have minimal management as long as deliverables discussed are being met.

The hospital is structured as follows:

  1. Provost office: head of both SPHMMC and Aabet (Burn, Emergency and Trauma Center)
  2. Vice provost offices: includes office of medical services, office of business development and office of academic research
  3. Aabet Hospital: this is SPHMMC’s new emergency hospital that is run by a CEO and still reports to/coordinates with the provost’s office

Fellowship Position:

While our hospital is ambitious in its mission and the services it wants to provide, it is lacking in the organizational and operational aspect. These are the areas that we plan to place the fellows in. SPHMMC strives to be an innovative and open-minded environment willing to try new things, which is unique for a government institution. A fellow educated in an American university with diverse experiences and skills would help the hospital approach situations with fresh ideas. Because the hospital is undergoing large scale expansion and is lacking in established structures, we would use the fellow to set up standardized practices and operations systems that can be used long-term.

We are currently working on strengthening our HR Department and developing an HR strategic plan that will enhance and boost productivity in the department. The fellow will review current HR strategy documents and work with the department head on related HR projects.

Qualifications Required:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Management or other related degree.

Professional & Technical Skills: Good written and oral communication skills, Microsoft office expert, operations plan development, experience in HR management softwares

Personality: Outgoing, resilient, creative thinker, patient and open-minded.  Calm and easy to communicate with, friendly and have the ability to work in teams.

Expected Deliverables:
Here are some examples of the service outcomes & day-to-day tasks depending on your experience.

  • Review and analyze current HR strategy documents and break down data with action plan
  • Support department on implementation of recommendations from previous strategic documents
  • Frequent reports and status updates on HR progress
  • Work on the HRIS system that the department will be launching
  • Transfer HR related paper documents to online server for easy access (via scanning and professional organization)
  • Work with the department head and the Office of Innovative Strategies and Operations team to brainstorm on innovative solutions for HR department
  • Review HR strategy documents and evaluate them on how things can better function
  • Meeting with HR and administrative body to increase cohesiveness and communication between other departments
  • Drafting, structuring, and standardizing HR related documents like, JD’s, New Hire Orientation Packets, S.O.P.’s, employee evaluation criteria etc..

Language: English is the working language spoken. A basic understanding of Amharic is preferable but not required.

Why This Fellowship?

St. Paul’s Millennium Medical Hospital will add both professional and personal growth to the Fellow in the following areas:

  • Application of concrete data
  • Will learn to effectively communicate and work with different kinds of personalities and people from a public sector background in a different environment (Ethiopia)
  • Understand the importance of strategy development for structuring and creating effective systems for large institutions
  • These fellows would gain a unique public sector experience in a growing and innovative hospital that aims to change the standard of care in the country.
  • They will have learned to apply “private sector thinking” to a public sector setting
  • They will be closely working with some inspirational people such as Dr. Zerihun Abebe, the provost of SPHMMC.
  • A greater understanding of the medical burden in Ethiopia. Seeing the patients will teach the fellows how to approach situations with empathy, and not sympathy, for greater productivity.
  • Confidence in their ability to work and make a huge impact in their country.
  • Because this is the first time that a government hospital is trying new and innovative approaches, the fellow would have the opportunity to pave the way for those that will come after them by creating long-term structures for a more organized functioning of the hospital.
