St. Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College – Guest Relations Strategic Manager Fellow
Website: www.sphmmc.edu.et | Sector: Public | Area of Work: Health
Social Media/Press
Reporting Manager
Dr. Rania Ibrahim: Strategic Advisor and International Relations Liaison to the Provost and Public Relations Manager at SPHMMC
Core Vision
SPHMMC is a public hospital dedicated to serving low-income and rural populations. The hospital is committed to providing excellent quality service at low-costs or no cost at all. Taking into consideration that Ethiopia has a large population and a remarkable need for adequate health care delivery, SPHMMC aims to be the leading teaching hospital in the country. In addition, the organization aims to create opportunities for professional growth, collaborate with different public and private sectors, and bring innovative solutions to long-standing problems.
As previously stated, SPHMMC’s main beneficiaries are low-income populations and people from nearby rural areas. The hospital provides low-cost or free medical care to these beneficiaries while trying to uphold and consistently improve its quality of care. The hospital recently opened a new kidney transplant center where the first organ transplant was performed in the country. Since then, the center is serving a large number of people and giving low cost options for dialysis and kidney transplants. Additionally, SPHMMC also recently inaugurated a fertility center that also gives free or low-cost services to its clients. Fertility services are often very expensive and are viewed as a luxury in Ethiopia.
Organizational Culture & Management Style
The Fellow would be working independently within the Public Relations & Administrative Department but with significant coordination of Dr. Rania Ibrahim and the Public Relations Office. SPHMMC is a huge hospital with different cultures among various departments. The hospital is attempting to serve an enormous number of people at low costs, meaning that the staff members are working extremely hard and are constantly busy. However, the hospital operates under the common goal of providing low-income and rural populations with low-cost but quality medical service. Due to the busy nature of this environment, the work culture is one of respect and understanding.
The Provost’s Office largely believes in allowing its employees a large degree of autonomy and focuses on deliverables and ideas more than hours punched. The Fellow will be expected to periodically report their activities and suggestions and will also be oriented to different resources at the hospital. Other than general guidance, the Fellow will have minimal management as long as discussed deliverables are met.
Fellowship Position
SPHMMC is fervently increasing its international partnerships. Because of this, the hospital gets countless visits from foreigners who are not only new to SPHMMC but also to Ethiopia in general. While our public relations office currently deals with these guests, there is a lack of standardized practices to welcome them appropriately and form long-standing partnerships. We would utilize the Fellow in this aspect by having him/her set up basic structures for guest relation protocols and training specific public relations skills.
Qualifications Required
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business, Marketing, Hospitality, Public Relations, Event Management or other related degree.
Professional & Technical Skills: Good written and oral communication skills, Microsoft Office Suite, operations plan development, outstanding interpersonal communication and networking.
Personality: Outgoing, responsible, and a strong team player.
Expected Deliverables
Here are some examples of the service outcomes & day-to-day tasks depending on your experience.
- Develop a well-written, and exhaustive plan on how to welcome guests, guarantee their appreciation of the hospital, steer them towards working partnerships, and ensure they have a pleasant time in Ethiopia
- Train other staff on the process of hospitality, professionalism, and SPHMMC advocacy
- Provide revisions to, or develop all guest relations materials such as hospital brochures, country profiles, activities available, and any other packages that the Fellow deems necessary
- Draft an operations plan on the way things currently function, the shortcomings, and how the department should function in the future
- Draft a training plan for SPHMMC staff to take over, as well as a structured guest relations strategy
- Identify different resources that guests need for a productive, and enjoyable stay in Ethiopia, as well as creating a database of these resources along with contact information
Language
English is the working language spoken. A basic understanding of Amharic is preferable but not required.
Why This Fellowship?
St. Paul’s Millennium Medical Hospital will add both professional and personal growth to the Fellow in the following areas:
- The Fellow will gain unique public sector experience in a growing, and innovative hospital that aims to change the standard of health care in the country.
- A greater understanding of the medical burdens impacting Ethiopia. Seeing patients will teach the Fellow how to approach situations with empathy and greater productivity.
- He/she will have learned to apply “private sector thinking” to a public sector setting.
- Applying and customizing western principles of standard operations in a different cultural setting.
- Planning and facilitating a comprehensive training on guest relations.
- Developing networking skills with people from different sectors both in, and out of the country.
- Will work closely with well-known leaders in Ethiopian health care practice, such as Dr. Zerihun Abebe, the Provost of SPHMMC.
- The Fellow will also gain the opportunity to network with different people from a variety of professions both in Ethiopia, and internationally.
- Gain confidence in their ability to work and make a huge impact in their country.
- Because this is the first time that a government hospital is trying new and innovative approaches, the Fellow will have the opportunity to pave the way for those that come after him/her by creating long-term structures for a more organized functioning of the hospital.

- Provost’s Office (Administrative Department).
- Medical Services (St. Paul’s Hospital Medical Services Office).
- Aabet Hospital (Addis Ababa Burn, Emergency and Trauma Center): this is a new hospital under SPHMMC.

Qualifications Required
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Management or Hospital Administration or any other relevant undergraduate degree.
Professional & Technical Skills: Good written and oral communication skills, Microsoft Office Suite, and operations plan development.
